Caregivers

Veterans & Caregiving

Veterans and their caregivers may have access to VA caregiver support, but programs have different eligibility rules and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Start with VA Caregiver Support

The VA Caregiver Support Program is the best starting point for current program information, local contacts, education, coaching, and peer support. Ask the VA to review the veteran’s service, health-care enrollment, care needs, and the caregiver’s relationship and role.

Program of General Caregiver Support Services

PGCSS offers general support and education pathways. Eligibility and services can differ from the comprehensive assistance program, so ask the VA which pathway fits rather than assuming one program applies.

Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers

PCAFC has its own eligibility requirements, application process, reassessment, and support rules. A caregiver should not be promised a stipend or other benefit based only on a diagnosis or service history; confirm current eligibility directly with VA.

Respite

VA respite may be available for eligible veterans and caregivers. Ask about the type of respite, authorization, frequency, local availability, and what tasks the provider can safely perform.

What to bring to the conversation

  • A clear description of the veteran’s daily care needs and supervision needs.
  • The caregiver’s relationship, schedule, and tasks.
  • Current clinical and VA contact information.
  • Questions about respite, training, transportation, equipment, peer support, and appeals.
